Another Year
Janelle Leek
Another year come and gone
I cannot see you, cannot touch you
Your occasional letter all I have to hold
on to
You fight a war I don’t
agree with
And your life is gone to hell here at home
And all I want is to hold you, to stroke your face
I want to know you’re
safe
You speak of plans, and I quote,
“If we don’t get killed over here”
I understand why you do it
If I don’t
understand why it must be done
My love, my friend, come home soon
Shake the sand from your hair and come to
me
Let someone else make the world free
Maybe I’m
selfish and people say I don’t care
But every time it’s you
How many trips is this now?
Let them send someone else
And let you retire in peace
You’ve done your duty and made us proud
Relax now, sleep sound, I’ll chase the shadows away
Remember you are not your gun, but a man
And you have a life to live
Keep me in your thoughts and stay safe
Til your feet again touch the soil you
protect so well
